I am an artist based in High Littleton, near Bath. I started painting in 2009 after almost 20 years working as a Landscape Architect. The change in career was a result of the development and launch of the innovative 'BuggySail' sunshade which gave me the freedom to paint and a timely 'Experimental Painting' workshop which further encouraged me to take the leap into the life of an artist. I'm so glad I jumped!
I work predominantly in acrylic and mixed media and am best known for my broadly abstract landscapes and seascapes with atmospheric skies. I work mainly from the studio taking inspiration for colour and subject from a series of sketches and watercolour studies produced outside on holidays.
I tend to exhibit in the South West around Bath, Bristol & Wells and sell work through Arts Trails and private commissions. My work has been exhibited at the Fairfax Gallery, London, the Beside the Wave Gallery, London and in the Bath Society of Artists Open Exhibition, Bath.
In 2013 I was instrumental in setting up the Cam Valley Arts Trail which supports local artists and promotes the arts locally within the Cam Valley; I continue to chair this group today.
My paintings illustrate that the natural environment is a huge inspiration for me; it's that ever changing light that dances, the movement of clouds and that feeling of being such a small part of the landscape that speaks to me. I enjoy experimenting and learning as I explore what can be achieved with the acrylic paint and how it combines with other materials and mediums. I tend to work on several pieces at a time which gives me the freedom to allow paintings to emerge as I layer paint over a gesso base and scratch/sand/rub back to reveal lost layers without overworking them. Using a limited palette, I work in a semi abstract, instinctive way letting the composition evolve. I love painting and really enjoy the process.
